PS5 on a monitor or a TV? One spec decides it
By Aamir Khan ·

Gaming monitor or TV for your PS5? What the PS5 really outputs (4K 120Hz, 1440p, VRR), monitor picks, and a TV checklist built around HDMI 2.1.
Should you plug your PS5 into a gaming monitor or a TV? Most of the answer comes down to one line on the spec sheet: HDMI 2.1. The rest depends on where you sit and how much space you have.
This guide sticks to what Sony officially says the PS5 supports, then gives you monitor picks and TV shopping rules. Products were checked on Amazon.in on 3 November 2026. Prices change, so check the latest price before you buy. Specs come from each product's own listing.
What the PS5 can actually output
From PlayStation's resolution and video output guide:
- 4K at up to 120Hz. The PS5 supports the HDMI 2.1 specification, and 4K 120Hz needs an HDMI 2.1 port on the TV, plus the cable that came with the console or an Ultra High Speed cable.
- 1440p output, if your screen supports 1440p at 60Hz or 120Hz. There's a "Test 1440p Output" option in Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output.
- VRR (variable refresh rate), which smooths out frame drops in supported games. Sony says it needs a VRR-compatible HDMI 2.1 display (PlayStation Blog).
- ALLM (auto low-latency mode), which switches compatible TVs to their low-lag game mode automatically.
Also remember that 120Hz only matters in games that offer a 120Hz or performance mode. Many PS5 games run at 60fps or lower. A 180Hz or 240Hz monitor's extra speed is for PC, not PS5.
Monitor or TV: the quick answer
| Gaming monitor | TV | |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Desk setups, small rooms, also gaming on PC | Sofa gaming, living rooms, playing with friends |
| Screen size | 24 to 27 inches | 43 to 65 inches |
| Speakers | Usually none or weak. Plan for a headset. | Built in |
| Typical PS5 resolution | 1080p or 1440p | 4K |
| Watch for | HDMI version (for VRR) | HDMI 2.1, 120Hz, VRR, ALLM |
Choose a monitor if you sit at a desk, also game on a PC, or share a room. Choose a TV if you play from a sofa, want 4K HDR, or have friends over to play.
Monitor picks
None of these listings promise HDMI 2.1 VRR in their specs, so don't count on VRR from a PS5. You can still run 1440p and use the PS5's built-in test to check 120Hz.
| Monitor | From the listing | Why |
|---|---|---|
| LG 24GS65F | 23.8-inch 1080p IPS, 180Hz, height and pivot adjustable | Small desks, PC players |
| Dell SE2726D | 27-inch 1440p IPS, 144Hz, HDMI and DisplayPort | A simple 1440p screen for PS5 and work |
| LG 27GS60QC | 27-inch 1440p curved VA, 180Hz, 2 HDMI ports, headphone out | Deeper contrast for dark rooms |
| Samsung Odyssey G5 (27-inch) | 27-inch 1440p Fast IPS, 180Hz, HDMI 2.0, height-adjustable stand | A solid all-rounder for PS5 and PC |
| LG 27GS75Q | 27-inch 1440p IPS, 180Hz (200Hz overclocked), 2 HDMI ports, height and pivot | The step up, with a better stand |
Sound: monitor speakers, if there are any, are weak. Plug a headset into the DualSense controller, or into the monitor's headphone jack where it has one. Our GTA 6 PS5 setup guide has headset picks.
Want 4K and VRR on a monitor? Look for a 4K monitor that clearly lists HDMI 2.1 and 4K 120Hz over HDMI. Browse 4K HDMI 2.1 monitors and check those two lines before you buy. Many listings only promise high refresh rates over DisplayPort, which the PS5 doesn't use.
TV shopping rules (for PS5)
TV listings change constantly, so here's a checklist rather than a single pick. A good PS5 TV should list:
- 4K at 120Hz (a "native 120Hz panel", not just "motion rate" or "game booster")
- HDMI 2.1, ideally on more than one port
- VRR and ALLM
- A game mode with low input lag
Then browse 4K 120Hz HDMI 2.1 TVs on Amazon.in, and confirm those four items on the brand's own spec page before you pay. Sony has a handy checklist for 4K 120fps on PS5.
What to skip
- "144Hz" TVs that don't say HDMI 2.1. Some reach high refresh rates only at lower resolutions.
- Buying a new TV just for 120Hz if your favourite games run at 60fps anyway.
- Expensive HDMI cables. Use the one that came with your PS5.

Play on both before you decide. Many gaming cafés in Mumbai run PS5s on big TVs, and some have high-refresh monitors. See gaming café prices in Mumbai and our PS5 vs paying per hour breakdown. Getting ready for GTA 6? Read what to buy before GTA 6.
