Minecraft
Mojang Studios · Xbox Game Studios
Minecraft is Mojang Studios' block-building sandbox, fully released in 2011, and one of the best-selling video games ever made. Its world is made of blocks you can mine, collect and place, which lets you build anything from a small hut to a full city. The game has two main modes. Survival gives you a limited supply of health and hunger, and you collect resources, craft tools and defend yourself from monsters at night. Creative gives you unlimited blocks and no danger, purely for building. There are also adventure maps, mini-games and servers made by the community. Minecraft is a game best shared. Up to four players can play split-screen on consoles like the PS5, PS4, Xbox and Switch, all in the same world at the same time. On PC, friends on neighbouring stations can join each other's worlds or a shared server. A group of friends building a base together, or racing to survive the first night, is one of the best cafe experiences for younger players and families. There are two editions: Java on PC, which has a huge modding scene, and Bedrock on consoles, mobile and Windows, which supports cross-play. Ask the cafe which edition they have, and whether you can log into your own account. Beginner tips On your first day in Survival, punch a tree for wood, craft a crafting table, then make a wooden pickaxe. Build a simple shelter before night falls. Never dig straight down; you might fall into a cave or lava. And make a bed as soon as you can to skip the night. Time needed Minecraft has no natural end, so the length is up to you. A one-hour session is enough to survive a few days with friends, and two hours lets you start a proper building project. Who should play Kids, families, creative players and groups who want to work together. It is rated E10+. It is also a great introduction to gaming for younger visitors.
