Gang Beasts

Boneloaf · Boneloaf

Gang Beasts is a physics brawler by the small UK studio Boneloaf, fully released in 2017. You control floppy, jelly-like characters and try to throw each other off buildings, into grinders, out of moving trucks or into the sea. It is one of the funniest local multiplayer games ever made. The controls are deliberately awkward. Each arm is controlled separately, so to grab someone you raise both arms and hold on, then try to lift and throw them while they flail. Nobody is ever fully in control, which levels the playing field and makes every match ridiculous. Maps are short scenarios with hazards: a ferris wheel, a subway train, a building site with moving girders, an incinerator. Modes include free-for-all, team fights and a waves mode where players fight together against computer-controlled enemies. Why it suits a gaming cafe Gang Beasts is designed for local play. Several friends on one screen is the whole experience. It is popular for birthday parties and groups that want a break from serious games. There is no learning curve to speak of, because everyone is equally bad at first. Setup PS5, PC or Switch with a controller for each player. Keyboard controls exist but are hard with several people. A large screen helps, since the camera tries to fit everyone. Tips to stay on the map Grab with both hands to hold someone firmly. Headbutts can knock out opponents, and an unconscious player is easy to throw. Climb by grabbing ledges and pulling yourself up. And when someone grabs you, flail and jump to break free. Session length Each round is a couple of minutes. Half an hour of Gang Beasts is plenty for most groups, and an hour is a lot of laughter. Who should play Friends who want to laugh, families with kids, and groups who are not into competitive games. It is rated E10+ and works well as a warm-up before or after a serious gaming session.
