GTA Online in 2026: is it still worth playing?

GTA Online launched in 2013 alongside GTA V. GTA 6 arrives on 19 November 2026, so it's fair to ask whether GTA Online is still worth your time, or whether Rockstar is about to switch it off.

The short answer: it's still alive, it's still getting updates, and Rockstar's owner says it will carry on after GTA 6 launches. Here's where things stand, using only sources from 2025 and 2026. Details were checked on 2 November 2026.

The short version

• Still updated: a mansion update in December 2025, a brand-new heist in July 2026, and events every week since.
• Not shutting down: Take-Two says it will keep supporting GTA Online after GTA 6 launches.
• GTA 6 has no online mode at launch. It's single-player, so GTA Online stays the only multiplayer GTA for now.
• GTA+ is bundled with digital GTA 6 pre-orders: one free month.
• Platforms: PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and PC.

What's new in GTA Online (2025–2026)

A Safehouse in the Hills (December 2025)

On 10 December 2025, Rockstar added mansions, one of the most-requested features in the game's history. The Rockstar Newswire describes three customisable luxury properties in the hills of Los Santos. They come with an AI assistant, business controls and a big garage, plus new missions and vehicles.

Free GTA V upgrade to PS5 and Xbox Series X|S (June 2026)

Since 18 June 2026, anyone who owns GTA V on any PS4 version, or the digital Xbox One version, can upgrade to the PS5 or Xbox Series X|S version for free. Story Mode and GTA Online progress move across with you (Rockstar Support). On PC, the move from Legacy to Enhanced is also free. Xbox One disc owners can't use the digital upgrade.

If you've been playing on a PS4, this is the moment to switch. Newer features such as Hao's Special Works vehicles and Career Progress are only on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.

The Kortz Center Heist (July 2026)

The biggest update of 2026 arrived on 14 July. In The Kortz Center Heist, you work with a counterfeiter to rob Los Santos' top art museum, solo or with up to three friends. It's free for all GTA V and GTA Online players. According to Rockstar's press release, it added:

• A rotating set of paintings to steal, with a bonus for your first sale each week. The same weekly first-time bonus now applies to several older heists too.
• Seven new vehicles, including the Benefactor LRC GT and the Grotti Cartuccia GT.
• Big additions to the Rockstar Mission Creator, including zombies, warp points, disguises and CCTV cameras.

You need a Mansion with an Art Studio to host the heist, but friends without one can join yours.

Events since then

Rockstar has kept posting new content every few weeks, including new cars, races and business events through the summer. Then came the Halloween event, running from 1 October to 4 November 2026. It brought triple rewards on Halloween Survivals and Slasher modes, plus a GTA$2,000,000 bonus for completing all five weekly challenges.

Rockstar's position: GTA Online and GTA 6

This is the question everyone asks. Here's what's officially been said:

• GTA 6 is single-player at launch. Take-Two's pre-order announcement says GTA VI "features a single-player experience."
• GTA Online will continue. Take-Two's statement: "GTA 6 is a single-player title and is due to release this November. We will continue to support GTA Online after GTA 6 release and beyond" (Game Rant). CEO Strauss Zelnick has also said he has "every reason to believe" GTA Online will keep being supported, pointing to its engaged community (GameSpot).
• No GTA 6 Online has been announced. Rockstar hasn't revealed a name, date or details for any GTA 6 multiplayer.

Unconfirmed: whether your GTA Online character, money or cars will carry over to a future GTA 6 online mode. Rockstar hasn't said anything about this, so ignore claims either way.

GTA+ and the GTA 6 pre-order bundle

GTA+ is Rockstar's monthly membership for GTA Online. Members get monthly bonuses, such as free cars and discounts, and access to the GTA+ Games Library, which includes GTA V's Story Mode and other Rockstar classics.

If you pre-order or buy GTA 6 digitally before launch, you get one month of GTA+ free. Take-Two calls this "the best way to get the most out of the ever-evolving world of GTA Online."

• On PlayStation, buy on or before 19 November 2026 and claim the month by 31 March 2027 (PlayStation India terms).
• On Xbox, buy before 23:59:59 on 19 November 2026 and redeem within 180 days (Xbox Store India).
• After the free month, GTA+ renews at the regular price unless you cancel. Set a reminder.
• Physical copies and the Ultimate Edition upgrade on its own don't qualify.

So, is GTA Online worth playing in 2026?

Yes, if you play with friends. Heists, races and mansion raids with a crew are still some of the most fun you can have in an online game, and there's more content than ever. With GTA 6 single-player at launch, GTA Online is also the only GTA your group can play together.

Maybe, if you're starting fresh and solo. There's a lot to unlock, and public lobbies can be chaotic. Play invite-only sessions with friends, and focus on one business at a time.
