Fortnite, made by Epic Games, started in 2017 as a battle royale where 100 players drop onto an island and the last one standing wins. Over the years it has turned into a whole platform: you can still play the battle royale, but you can also build, race, play music games, or jump into thousands of experiences made by other players. The core battle royale stands apart because of building. You gather materials and can instantly build walls, ramps and floors to defend yourself or gain height. It is incredibly fun but has a steep learning curve against good players. That is why Zero Build exists: same game, no building, which is far friendlier for beginners and groups of casual players. Other popular modes include LEGO Fortnite, a cooperative survival and crafting game; Rocket Racing, an arcade racer; Fortnite Festival, a rhythm game; and the Creative and Unreal Editor creations, where you can find everything from deathruns to prop hunt. Many of these are perfect for a mixed group at a cafe. Setup: PC is the classic choice, especially for builders who want a keyboard and mouse. PS5 and Switch versions are smooth too. You need an Epic Games account, and since it is free, most players already have one. Fortnite is rated T. Tips for your first session. Start with Zero Build squads to learn the map and the weapons. Visit landmarks less popular than the big named towns to get a quiet start. Learn the ramp-wall combo early if you play with building; it is the single most useful defensive trick. And in squads, revive teammates quickly and share materials. Time guide: a full battle royale match lasts up to about 20 to 25 minutes. Creative games can be as short as a few minutes. For a group, an hour gives many attempts, and a two-hour block makes room to try a few different modes. Fortnite suits kids and teens, friend groups who want variety, and anyone who wants a game with something for everybody. If one friend hates shooters, there is almost always a mode they will enjoy.
